Facing up to Australia’s skills challenge: industry sets key priorities to address the skills crisis
On 16 April, the National Skills Policy Collaboration released a ten-point plan to meet Australia’s skills challenges head on. The statement by leading employer and union groups calls for significant action, innovative thinking and creative solutions to address Australia’s skills crisis. Skills Australia and the Industry Skills Councils in particular have been identified as key drivers in the development of this initiative.

COAG Communique 26 March 2008
The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) held its 21st meeting in Adelaide on 26 March. For the first time, all governments agreed on a common framework for the reform of education. COAG has endorsed a comprehensive set of the aspirations, outcomes, progress measures and future policy directions in the key areas of early childhood, schooling and skills and workforce development.

Growing the desert: Educational pathways for remote Indigenous people
This report, from the National Centre for Vocational Education and Training (NCVER), maps the picture of Indigenous people's participation in vocational education and training and other educational services across Australia's desert regions. The report identifies a range of innovations and barriers experienced in enabling pathways through learning into work and other meaningful livelihood opportunities.

Development and Humanitarian Aid qualifications and competency project to commence
In 2007 the ISC produced a scoping report proposing and education and training framework for Development and Humanitarian Aid sector. The report recommended development of new qualifications and units of competency drawn from several industries including community services, transport and logistics and business services.
